The Story*

Disillusioned by the Vietnam War, the threat of nuclear holocaust and the assassinations of a civil rights leader, a president and his brother, a young hippy/actor tries his luck in the sin-laden city of Los Angeles – City of the Angels.

Down and out, disillusioned, physically dissipated by drugs, illicit sex, and riotous living, the young actor goes from parties, to jail cells, to a run down bodega in the rear of a cheesy hoagie stand named, “Horrible Harry’s Hoagie’s of Hollywood”. Confronted by converted hippies, preaching like new-age Elijah’s on the corners of LA, the young actor has reoccurring nightmares about the End of the Word, in a burning furnace that consumes both LA and San Francisco. One night his dream becomes a reality!

“At 6:00.41 AM, on February 9, 1971 a powerful earth quake shakes Los Angeles in the middle of my dream of its destruction. Suddenly awake, and believing the End of the world and my life had finally come, I instantly realize that I am lost – not only physically, but lost in every way. While I cry out in the middle of that Earth Quake with the millions of frightened humans I heard and saw in my dream – crying “God, save me!” – I have a vision. Fully awake, the noise of destruction and annihilation, fades. All becomes mysteriously quiet. I see a brilliant light emerging out of a field of stars – clouds were about his feet. I see the warm, dark eyes and face of one I had seen so many times before, in a painting, in a book, sometimes, in the house of a poor man, or a host of candles in a cathedral – there is no doubt in my mind that it is Him. He stands now in the midst of an earth quake before me. Our eyes meet. Peace unspeakable. My life instantly changes. I throw the few things I own into a small pack and over the rubble of a broken LA, I step out into the dawn of a new day -- I head home.”

Since then, I’ve been a monk, a husband, a father, an evangelist, a pastor, a professor, a rabbi and a school teacher. I’ve directed scores of plays, and a movie. I’ve written three novels, and eight play scripts – all never published or produced – until now.
